The West Ave Crew is a trio of friends, band mates, and marimba players based in Boulder, Colorado: Jesse Larson, Austin Fracchia, and Joe Goodhew. The trio plays and teaches together so much, deciding to give themselves a group name just made sense; they are named after the street running adjacent to the Kutandara Center (Western Avenue).
The crew has performed and taught with each other in a number of groups including Tamba!, Musha Marimba, Chris Berry's Panj-Orchestra, the Kutandara Marimba Experience, and the Kutandara Center. Teaching influences include Amy & Randy McIntosh, Chris Berry, Tendai Muparutsa, Kurai Blessing Mubaiwa, Zivinai Masango, and Paul Mataruse. The trio has taught individually and together in a variety of settings, primarily based at the Kutandara Center and Kamp Kutandara, as well as for a number of individuals/bands such as Musha Marimba and Njuzu Marimba based in Juneau, Alaska.
The group works off of each other's teaching and performing strengths to create a friendly and fun learning environment. When teaching a workshop, the crew strives to adapt to the group by either using one main instructor with assistants or equally dividing up parts to teach a song faster. Having three teachers makes them better equipped to meet the needs of the individual student. In the end, the ultimate goal is to have a fun time while making sure everyone walks away having learned something valuable, whether it be a new song, a new part, a new technique, or a new way of engaging this music.
